In a September article for "InformationWeek," Jonathan Bean, assistant professor of architecture and sustainable built environments, at the University of Arizona's College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture (CAPLA), shared his expertise on the pressing issue of balancing artificial intelligence (AI) demands with sustainable energy initiatives.

As AI technologies advance and become more resource-intensive, there are growing concerns about their environmental impact, particularly in terms of energy consumption.

"It's crucial to strategically deploy AI, such as in thermostat controls, while also grappling with broader cultural and business model questions," said Bean. "Tech companies often innovate with new AI-driven products but must balance profitability with societal and environmental impacts."

Bean, who specializes in sustainable design and digital technologies, underscored the importance of designing AI systems that are not only powerful but also energy-efficient. He highlighted the potential risks that unchecked AI development could pose to global sustainability efforts, especially if energy demands outpace the adoption of renewable energy sources. Bean's forward-thinking approach emphasizes the need for a proactive strategy, one that aligns technological progress with sustainability goals.
