Built environment innovation. Water consciousness. These are the principles fourth-year B.Arch students in the ARC 401 studio considered when crafting designs for a research center at the base of Sentinel Peak, along Tucson’s Santa Cruz River, for the Fall 2021 Richärd Kennedy Fourth-Year Studio Prize.
Ally Kwan ’23 B.Arch has been awarded the 2021 Chapter Leader Honor Award from the national American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) organization, while the UArizona AIAS student organization has been honored with a 2021 AIAS Chapter Honor Award Honorable Mention.
B.Arch student Christine Ufondu, who is also pursuing in a Minor in Real Estate Development, will graduate in 2025. She was born in Houston, Texas, but mostly grew up in Rivers State, Nigeria. Though she chose to come to CAPLA site unseen, it was the right decision: she loves the community of faculty, students and immersive design.
Assistant Architecture Professor Courtney Crosson is working with CAPLA students to design solutions for a more sustainable Tucson by 2050, thanks to sponsorship and advising by GLHN Architects & Engineers. In the Fall of 2021, students partnered with five community organizations to design sustainable urban food systems.
This fall, third-year Bachelor of Architecture students in studios led by Teresa Rosano, Dulce Arambula, Eduardo Guerrero, Siri Trumble and Beth Weinstein participated in a universal design awards program generated from a partnership between AGM/Ascension Wheelchair Lifts and CAPLA. Tayler Forsberg, who is from Rice Lake, Wisconsin, will graduate from the Bachelor of Architecture program in May 2022. He then plans to attend graduate school before working towards becoming a registered architect and, eventually, teaching.
Yaqui tribe member Daniel Vega, who is from Tucson, graduated from the BS in Sustainable Built Environments program in December 2021. Continuing his passion for sustainable design, he is taking advantage of the CAPLA Master of Architecture accelerated master’s program (AMP), which he will complete in 2024.
First-year MS Urban Planning student Glenn Ingram has won the Best Student Map award among all collegiate entrants in the 2021 Arizona Geographic Information Council Maps & Apps Contest. His map, "New York City 100-Year Floodplain," contrasts NYC's population density with the FEMA 100-year floodplain.
Associate Professor of Architecture Aletheia Ida and UArizona students in architecture and biosystems engineering recently concluded a year-long, collaborative research and design project with the University of Washington and University of Pennsylvania funded by Google, with in-kind support from Microsoft.
1,892 international students are currently enrolled in microcampus dual-degree programs at UArizona, an increase of 400 over last year. Silvana Lucia Sosaya Moreno is one of those students, here this semester from UPC Lima for CAPLA’s BS in Sustainable Built Environments.

The semester before their final year in UArizona’s five-year Bachelor of Architecture program, students have the opportunity to reflect on their learnings over their first four years and put their best work forward in an exhibition and portfolio competition: the Richärd Kennedy Fourth Year Prize, providing $10,000 in awards and scholarships.
